BRING THE WAR HOME INITIATIVE
While VFPLI will continue to support our allied peace groups on Long Island, we are shifting our focus of action from shopping malls and street corners to the offices of our political representatives. We must make them responsive to our message and accountable for their votes. As usual, we will keep the our friends at Long Island Alliance, Suffollk Peace Network, and all other allied organizations informed about our activities and hope you will join us in our actions.
March on The Pentagon
VFPLI will be participating in the March on the Pentagon on March 21st in Washington, DC. Two of our members, Thomas Brinson and Mac Bica will be participating as well in “The Poetry of War and Anti-war,” a poetry event on the 21st to be held at Busboys and Poets in DC.
Teach-In on Afghanistan
VFPLI's "teach-in" entitled "Why Afghanistan is Not the Good War" and not in America's national interest will take place on April 23rd, 7PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock. The Program will feature presentations by 1st Lieutenant Christopher Vongsawat, recently returned from Afghanistan; Kathleen Foster, photographer and filmaker of "AFGHAN WOMEN: A HISTORY OF STRUGGLE;" and Professor Camillo “Mac” Bica, VFPLI coordinator. The event is Cosponsored by The Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives and the Suffolk Peace Network.
Veterans For Peace Long Island Fundraiser
VFPLI will be having a fundraiser on Sunday April 19, 2009 at the Cinema Arts Center. We are extremely excited that our Program will feature Dave Rovics who has been called the “musical voice of the progressive movement in the US.” In addition we are honored to have performances by Left on Red and political Satire by performance artist, playwright, and VFPLI member Bradley Pheonix.
Veterans For Peace Long Island Public Access TV Show
With the able assistance of VFPLI benefactor and friend Terry Marone, we will be producing half hour shows in which Mac Bica will interview important and interesting voices within the peace movement. These shows will to be broadcast monthly on VFPLI’s weekly Public Access show (Brookhaven/Hauppauge) every Friday from 6-7PM and on Terry’s Show “Alternative Voices” on Tuesday evenings at 7P on the Woodbury/Huntington Public Access.
Veterans For Peace Truth in Recruiting
With the fear of Bush Administration's "No Child Left Behind" reprisals behind us, VFPLI is re-energizing our efforts to get peace veterans into Long Island schools to bring some clarity and truth to the students and teachers regarding the reality and nature of war and military service. I have enclosed a copy of our letter to school administrators, etc for your perusal. I urge that if you have contacts in the schools or are a teacher yourself, please work with us to get our veterans into the classroom, assemblies, etc. - to get our voices heard. Please circulate our flyer widely.
For this month's demonstration schedule at local Military Recruiting Stations and leafleting at High Schools: Call 631-875-8647 or email rksrc@optonline.net
Arlington New York
We are planning an "Arlington New York" event, - a cross, or appropriate religious icon, in the sand for each serviceperson killed in the phony war on terrorism) - for the Memorial Day weekend at Jones beach to coincide with the disgraceful celebration of the machinery of death that occurs there each year.
Chapter Membership
We will continue our efforts to recruit new members into our ranks so as to enable a formidable presence of PEACE VETS at upcoming events and demonstrations. Please help us in our recruiting effort.
